August 3, 2009

This year I have read 23 books and in the next week and a half, I plan to read another 3, at least 2.

Recent additions to the list of books I've read:

Augustus: The Life of Rome's First Emperor by Anthony Everitt

Books 8 and 9 of the Wheel of Time series

I'm close to halfway through with book ten of the Wheel of Time and on chapter 2 of Renovation of the Heart by Dallas Willard.

At the library, I picked up The Hitler of History by John Lukacs. It is a history of all the biographies on Hitler and the development of thought in them.

Also, I found Rome and Jerusalem by Martin Goodman. It describes the clash between these two civilizations and the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. The author claims this event is anti-semitism at its roots. I doubt I will be able to finish this in a week and a half. It is a thick 550 page study.

Recently, I have been thinking about evil. What is evil, how anyone becomes evil, are we inherently evil, and how we can respond. A couple objects of study are Hitler, Mao, and Pol Pot. They seem to me history's pinnacles of corruption and terror. They aren't the only ones, but I'll start with them and hopefully be able to continue through grad school in the fall.

Rome and Jerusalem is my third or fourth book in the history of Rome. There are a few other books on Rome I would like to read. A couple on Cleopatra, Caesar's Conquest of Gaul, three or four on the Roman army and it's battle tactics, one on Cicero, and others on the barbarian tribes surrounding Rome.

I have had a lot to think about this last week. A lot of soul searching. Nothing to talk about here because I don't like being super personal on a blog, but heavy things nevertheless. Reading Renovation of the Heart is my attempt to sift through a number of character defects and address them as directly as possible.

Something I do in my journal at the end of the day, is write a couple words in big bold letters that describe how I feel at the moment or words that would catch the "flavor" of the day. Whenever I blog, I will do that here.

Humbled

Hopeful
