Happiness.

I have two images when I think of happiness:

Starbucks: drinking coffee, listening to quiet music (Jon Foreman, Andrew Bird, Hans Zimmer, Sigur Ros) and reading poetry from Dylan Thomas or Walt Whitman. Perhaps studying theology or philosophy.

Backpacking: on the trail, sun shining, resting with my back to a rock, looking to the sky and enjoying the absence of artificial noise. Just me, God and solitude.

For the few of you who read my blog: what do you think of when you think of happiness?

2 comments:

  1. family present: at my brothers, playing cards with brother in law and dad, 2 baby nephews are crawling under the table, i have a cup of coffee in my hand, i am beating everyone.

family future: coming home from work, nice dinner to eat, awesome wife and well-groomed children, no plans, maybe read a book or listen to NPR on the radio.

i also think of dallas willard teaching about the root of the word "happiness" coming from "hap" which also gives us "happenstance" and "happening." the point is that happiness happens, it is not a goal, but an occurrence.
